“You sure this is the right move?” Wade asks, as we’re standing on the sidewalk outside the diner. I can see Joe through the window and the bright smile he’s wearing only helps to make me feel like an even bigger asshole for what’s about to happen.

“At this point, it’s our only move. Maybe bringing him in is only protecting him. But it’s possible that he’ll be able to help us get to the bottom of this.” Wade nods, and doesn’t question me anymore.

I take in a heavy breath, feeling like I’m preparing for battle, before I push the door open and Wade and I step inside. The moment Joe sees me, his face lights up and that sinking feeling inside of me grows even more.

“Hey you! I didn’t think I was seeing you today.” I try to return his smile, but I’m pretty sure it comes out as more of a grimace.

“We’re actually not here to eat. Do you have a minute?” His eyes widen in surprise, but he nods his head hesitantly.

“Yeah, sure. One second.” He walks over to Kay, the older lady he works with and says something to her quietly. She glances over at us before patting him on his shoulder and gesturing to the other girl they work with. She’s taking care of a table, but I see her glance back at them quickly. I’m not sure what all is said, but Joe nods sharply before coming back over to Wade and I.

“Kay and Mary will cover for me. What’s up?” With a heavy and reluctant sigh, I pull my badge out of my back pocket and show it to him. The moment his eyes land on it, his body stiffens and face flushes pale.

“We need to ask you a few questions. Any way you can come down to the station?”

“Wh- What? Why?” His voice trembles with every sound and I feel even more like the biggest asshole.

“You’re not in trouble.” Wade quickly tries to assure him, but I’m not sure it actually does any good. “We just have a few questions to ask you about a current case.”

I can see the wheels turning in Joe’s brain and I know he’s trying to figure out how he could possibly fit into one of our cases. Thankfully he doesn’t give us any push back and agrees to come with us. He fills Kay in on what’s going on and grabs his things from the back. He’s quiet the entire way back to the station and I hate it. I hate not being able to hold his hand, or kiss him. I want to comfort him, to explain better that he’s not in trouble, that we’re just worried about him. But I can’t. Right now I’m not Mason. I’m Detective Grant, and I have a job to do.

Wade takes Joe and gets him settled in one of the interrogation rooms. I hated the idea of putting him in there because I don’t want him to think he’s a suspect.
